Spearfishing
The year 1960 was a magical time for a 7-year-old boy. On the weekends, my mom would take us down to Sandsprit Park, in Stuart, Fla., with a paper bag full of home-made fried chicken and a bucket full of cold RC Colas. We would spend the day exploring the Manatee Pocket with our double snorkel plastic masks that had the little balls in the top to keep the water out. The pocket was clear back then and had marine life everywhere. I couldn’t get enough of the amazing marine life. I became addicted to the silent, underwater world.
Several years later, my dad was transferred to the Coast Guard base in St. Petersburg. Old broomstick handles with a nail fastened to the end for spear points soon turned into single-band Arbalete spearguns from the Base PX. Our new playground was not monkey bars, swings or slides but the docks and pilings at the Coast Guard base where we stalked sheepshead and snapper always under the watchful eyes of the Coasties. It was easy to become one of Captain Nemo’s crew searching for adventure in the mysterious underwater world. One fish with one breath soon became addictive.
It didn’t take long for my brother and me to dream of bigger fish and more underwater adventures. The Gandy Bridge was just a short bike ride away, so we loaded our gear into our baskets. and away we went. Swimming from the shore to the bridge pilings soon became our private underwater hunting grounds. We further honed our skills on the abundance of spadefish, filefish, sheepshead and snappers. We’d plan our next adventures while riding home with our bicycle baskets full of fish.
In 1968, after my dad retired, we moved back to Port Salerno. It was great to be back. Our old stomping grounds had expanded being our dreams. The St. Lucie inlet with its jetty and reefs north and south became our new underwater hunting sanctuary. We even spearfished in the middle of the inlet at slack water. We knew of several deep holes that always held a small jewfish or two. The boat traffic was minimal, and most of the boaters knew us anyway.
Jewfish, turtles and just about everything else were legal to spear back then. There was very little or no presence of the Marine Patrol, FWC or Sheriff’s Dept. There were very few of us even in the sport of spearfishing. With the start of the population boom of the 70’s, our sleepy little commercial village started to change. Over the next few years, there became too much boat traffic to dive the inlet, river and jetty, so we moved our spearfishing south to “The Hole”. We never came back without a cooler full of snapper and grouper.
With the increasing popularity of recreational boating and fishing, our spearfishing trips soon turned hazardous. After almost being hit by several boats and boaters throwing lead sinkers at us, we realized our beloved sport wasn’t so popular with others. We were accused of destroying the reefs and running off all the fish. For the next decade, our reefs were being used by those that believed you must look but not touch, and the only thing you should shoot with is a camera. Back then, going into a dive shop looking for spearguns brought nasty looks and hateful remarks. I really thought the sport I loved was nearing its end.
I could not believe how others thought we were destroying sea life because spearfishing is the most sustainable way to harvest fish. We only target one fish at a time depending on its type, size and season. It’s not like we were catching undersized, out-of-season fish and throwing them back after they were speared. In my opinion, there is no way spearfishermen can deplete an entire species.
Fortunately, the extreme sport of spearfishing has once again become popular, and it is growing at a 15-20 percent per annum rate. Modern-day spearos are more in tune with their environment than any other group. They see the condition of our reefs and fish species up close and personal. Our gear has become much more efficient as are our means of harvest and the chance of lost fish (other than to sharks and cudas) is minimal. There is nothing like spearing a dolphin or wahoo in the deep blue water of the Gulfstream or fat grouper or snapper off the reef. One breath, one fish is really very rare, and we spend most of our time going up and down just trying to get a shot at our wary but tasty prey all the while in their beautiful, exhilarating, mysterious underwater world.

January 2010
Captain Vibert had client Michael Zito on board for a half-day fishing on January 12th. The Master Captain negotiated very strong offshore winds and showed the consistency that has made him a local legend. Despite the weather, Captain Vibert still delivered for his clients: Two 30lbs. Dorados and a nice 15lbs. Yellowfin tuna.
The new year began on January 5th for the Wanderer when client Kelly Masterson had an action-packed day of fishing. The intensifying Marlin bite was felt in the form of a 600lbs. Black Marlin that managed to escape at the last second. After losing a big Sailfish Kelly settled into some great action and ended up catching five 30lbs.-40lbs. Dorado. The next day client Cindy also had some near-miss billfish action with lots of Dorado catches to make up for it: four 30lbs.-40lbs. Dorado and a 30lbs. Wahoo made it to the fishboxes, but a 500lbs. Striped Marlin and Sailfish narrowly escaped. That evening on a sunset cruise client Jean Francois got the most out of his 2.5 hours by bringing home two 30lbs. Dorados and a 10lbs. Yellowfin Tuna.

On the 1st of February client Terry Schwartz booked the Nice n’ Tight for a quick 3 hour trip. Captain Eduardo expertly put him right on a nice tuna bite, and in virtually no time at all Terry had boated two outstanding Yellowfin Tuna ranging from 10-12 lbs. These babies made for some delicious eating! For several years now the Nice n’ Tight has been the gold standard for under-25′ boats in Garza, and it appears that reputation is safely intact
On January 25th, 26th, and 27th the Wanderer was honored to welcome Captain Kevin Faver, his wife Carrie, and the crew of The Outdoors Show for a few days of fishing and filming. Kevin and Carrie repeated last year’s success by catching four Dorados and releasing seven Sailfish. Also Kevin released one of the nicest Rooster Fish of the year so far.
February 6th was a day for the staff of Nosara Paradise Rentals to have some fun out on the water. General Manager Javier Hernandez, transporter Comi, and NPR Concierge Numero Uno Manuel took a sunset cruise on the Wanderer and hauled in a whole mess of fish, included a baby Cuberra Snapper…they returned the little fella to the blue water, but even as a youth it fought like a tiger. It’s great to see our wonderful staff have a great day out on the water!

On March 10th client Dan Bracec went our for three hours looking for the BIG Cuberra Snappers that lurk deep within the safety of the reefs. He started out catching the requisite Black tuna, then applied our specialized FishingNosara Tactic to hook up the big boys. The fish bit, but he was just too big to fight and escaped back to the depths. These Cuberras can grow up to 400lbs., but once they get bigger than 100lbs. you can forget about catching them. A few days later client Ned Garber got himself a Snapper, but this one was much more reasonably sized.
Things got off to a fast start on February 20th when client David Yudelson put the local Black marlin population on the run. They had action in the spread all day and lost an angry 500lbs. tail-walking Black Marlin. David and the boys hung tough, and later in the day they caught and released a Black Marlin around 250lbs. He finished his day off with some topwater casting a caught a variety of reef fish. Great day David!
In late-February we welcomed Captain Dan Parker, a legend in the Northeast Florida fishing community as both an angler and as the owner of Pinpoint Marine. He was in Nosara with his wife Charlene for three 3/4 days on the Wanderer and they had a great time. On February 26th Captain Dan caught this sweet Wahoo and fought bitterly with a 400lbs. Marlin, which jumped off the hook about 200 feet off the transom.

Client Bob went fishing on the Nice n’ Tight on April 9th and had a very respectable showing catching a 12lbs. Pompano, a tough little needlefish, and a nice Black tuna. Captain Eduardo brought out the big gun for a three day booking with client Stiff from April 10th to the 12th. The first day on theSportsman was highlighted by a whopping 50lbs. Dorado. Things got even better the next day when they released a 100+lbs. Sailfish. On the final day then caught and released a 30lbs. Rooster fish. With a man like Captain Eduardo at the helm, you can have these kind of multi-species days, or hammer on tuna all day long. Bottom line is this man catches fish!
Recently client David Laudon had an incredible half-day trip. In a short time they had boated 10 triggerfish and a nice jack. Captain Vibert knows these inshore reef like none other and is always ready to bring in this kind of solid action!
On March 22nd, Jim Bridges and his party really captured the flag this month with a ridiculous FIVE Sailfish released in a single day, including the infamous Double Bill Shot. Great work Captain William and mates Alex and David for coming up with the idea for the picture, and then having the guts to hold onto these powerful Sailfish.

Captain Eduardo has been fishing like a madman in the last month, and he has theNice n’ Tight back on top of the leaderboard. He’s had a great mix of sunset cruises, nature tours, and flat-out billfish hunting…the common thread? Lots and lots of smiling clients. On April 19th Captain Eduardo welcomed Jacksonville client Van Evans and his girlfriend for the first of two days fishing. Van owns a great little seafood restaurant in Florida and is no stranger to some great looking fish. Their first sunset cruise netted them a nice macarella and a ponpano. A few days later they had another awesome sunset cruise catching a delightful white tuna and a beautiful amberjack.
That same morning clients Crissy, Rich, and Robert caught five nice white tunas in just a few hours fishing. Captain Eduardo knows how to stay on the fish, evidenced by two trips on the same day catching the same species fish. His experience on these waters give him the competitive edge.
On April 27th Captain Eduardo got on a run of smacking all the Sailfish upside the head. First client Mark raised up three Sails and ended up catching and releasing a 110lbs. monster. Then on a May 5th trip client Bill got a pair of the mighty Sailfish weighing about 80lbs.-110lbs. Bill was back on the Nice n’ Tight the next day with Marlina and they knocked out another 90lbs. Sailfish. They also got a pretty white tuna and five bonitas to fill the fishbox.
Clients Kevin and Elena released a 100lbs. Sailfish on May 9th to round out the week of Sailfish action on the Nice n’ Tight.
On April 26th clients Dwayne and Katrina fishing for a half-day on the reefs. They applied our FishingNosara Cuberra Tactic and caught a beautiful 30lbs. Cuberra snapper. They rounded out their day with four sweet whites tunas. The next day client David Caywood went hunting for the big boys.
Unfortunately they didn’t get so big by being easily caught and despite raising up a Sail and a big-time Marlin they couldn’t get ‘em hooked up and to the boat. Client Daniel Fero also had an action packed day on May 4th, albeit with limited results. He got some dinner in the form of a big Yellowfin tuna, but lost a pair a Cadillac-sized snappers on the bottom. Likewise for client Bobby Leesman on May 10th, who fished a full day on came away with a 30lbs. Yellowfin tuna. He also has action throughout the day, but the fish were tough to catch.
June 2010
Captain Vibert welcomed client Fredrick Porcase, his son and Chase Crews out for two action packed days. These clients had spent three days on the Wanderer chasing down billfish, yet chose the Master Captain for their assault on the reefs.
The Cabo did not disappoint! On June 14th the group caught twenty 15-20lbs. Yellowfin tunas and a pair of 12lbs. Yellowtail snappers in the morning. In the afternoon they caught two amazing 40lbs. Rooster fish and a 25lbs. Cuberra Snapper. Then on June 15th the party caught another 40lbs. Rooster fish, four 15lbs. Yellowfin Tunas, and two MASSIVE 50lbs. Amberjacks.
The 31′ Wanderer has built quite a reputation in the six short month she’s been in service as the dominant billfish hunter in the area. This month Captain William and mates Alex and David had some phenomenal billfish releases and also put clients on a wide variety of other fish. One of my best friends Jacksonville angler Chetri Dimitroff was aboard the Wanderer on May 28th and caught his first ever Pacific Blue Marlin. The fight lasted seventeen minutes and ended with a safe live release. Chetri represents FishingNosara at fishing tournaments around Florida; last year he placed in the Kingbuster 400. This trip, Chetri and his posse had an awesome time and caught nice tattooed sunburns.
Jacksonville angler Dennis Dahlquist also had a 300+lbs Marlin release on a late-May trip on the Wanderer; As usual Captain William was on top of his game. I was joined by fellow Jacksonville angler Ray Carter and the lovely Georgia peach Paula Price for a great trip on theWanderer on May 30th. The weather was just about as perfect as could be imagined and the party had a fantastic array of catches.
In total we caught a mean little 20lbs. Wahoo, a 30lbs. Amberjack, a 35lbs. Cuberra snapper and two 12lbs. Yellowfin tuna. The highlight of the trip was a pair of 100+lbs. Sailfish releases. Paula showed her skills on the reel as both fights were under ten minutes and both fish were released.
In June 14th Bryan Russo and his party got on three very nice Yellowfin tunas, and were chowing down on fresh sushi when a 120lbs. Sailfish ripped through the spread. A ten minute fight ensued and the crew safely released the monster fish.
