I know it’s not politically correct to by the National Enquirer, but I got roped in by the headline, “Hollywood’s Deadly Skin and Bones Diet: Stars Risking Their Lives to be Thin.”Then there was the Tabloid, In Touch, with a similar headline, “Scary Skinny!”
This was “professional” research: I wasn’t really reading these things.Confessions from the Tabloid
The cover of the Enquirer featured images of 5′ 7″, 100 pound Angelina Jolie; 5′ 6″, 110 pound Anna Kournikova; and 5′ 8″, 106 pound Cate Blanchett, and others.
Looking past some amusing photos, I came to the article which quoted Dr. Stanley Title as saying, “The skin and bones diet is extremely dangerous and can cause serious health implications. Literally, there are starving themselves to death.”
This is so because celebrities know that they look heavier when they’re on camera so they go to extremes to compensate for that even it means protruding bones.
Healthy Doesn’t Mean Skinny
Frequently, people forget about health when they talk about weight loss.Leaving out things like nutrition, quality-of-life issues, general health, and energy levels, goals usually focus on clothing size, body fat percentage, and weight.I see something even more alarming with the skin and bones diet plans because I have tested body composition over 7000 times as a fat loss coach.
Body fat to Muscle Ratio
The fact that weight loss can come from muscle rather than fat is a major concern.So people end up with very little muscle but still have fat spots. I’ve checked the composition of some women who look like they’re thin, but have higher than average body fat ratios.
Much like a pipe with insulation wrapped around it, what people like this have amounts to a bone with a pat of fat surrounding it.Problem with this is compounded by the slow metabolism and lack of strength.I used to think that fat was bad: now I know that skinny fat is worse.
4 Tips on How to be Fit and Lean, Not Skinny
1. Continue eating.The weight loss resulting from reducing the amount of food you eat usually doesn’t last, so it isn’t a real solution. This is not how to lose weight fast.
2. Your normal routine should include strength training.Weight training helps you build muscle, elevate your metabolism and have overall good health.
3 Use a different vocabulary.Try using terms like “improving nutrition,” rather than “going on a diet.”Instead of wanting to look skinny, how about trying to have an athletic look? Just look at how people talk in a weight loss forum.
4. Keep tabs on your body composition.This will help you avoid damaging muscle loss.
This is the same approach natural bodybuilders take: they each up to six meals with natural food every day to keep their muscle.Keep in mind, it’s about being “lean” and “healthy,” not being “skinny.”

Here’s To A New Year And A New You…How To Stick To Your Diet
Don’t ruin the new year with old rationalizations: they don’t work. Actually, all your excuses have done is kept you overweight and out of shape. Almost every weight loss forum will be talking about gearing up for another new year.
This is a good time to get rid of all your fitness contraptions and miracle supplements that wouldn’t work even if you were using them.Stop trying all the miracle weight solutions that keep coming out and start working out.
Start investigating some of these fitness and health discoveries before wasting your time and money on them.A good thing to do is add up how much your health care bill will be, then compare it to the cost of healthy food, gym membership and a few weights to use at home. That should make you want to start working on that body of yours.
Take a page out of the sociologists’ book: they claim that your income is about equal to the average income of your friends.
Take that premise and apply it to your body: you’re going to be in similar shape to those you hang around.If you don’t have anyone to support you in your efforts, do something about it! Hanging around with obese, fast food eating beer drinkers isn’t how to lose weight fast.
Get out there and meet some new people with good fitness habits.They will be a good influence on you.
Don’t try saying that you are fat because of your genetics.
Sure, there are some genes that might tend to cause some people to be overweight, but they don’t force you to be fat.Let’s suppose genetics are pushing you toward being overweight: you should work even harder to fight against it.
Quit making resolutions and vague commitments to your health and fitness.Well defined goals are the ones that will drive you to success, so get specific about what you want.Your mind will help drive you towards your goals.
