Singing audition tips
Choosing songs to practice singing is different than choosing songs for a singing audition. When practicing, the idea is to expand your vocal technique and you do this by challenging yourself with songs with broad ranges. Just remember that audition songs should highlight your strengths and accomplishments.
For your singing audition, you need at least one ballad and one up-tempo song. When it’s time to choose your songs you should look for songs with a story and plenty of range. There is no in between when it comes to ballads, either you hate them or love them. If balads are not your cup of tea, then it’ll be tough choosing a ballad to sing. When you choose a ballad, pick one that you can really relate to and the slow tempo areas will not seem so long. It’s safe to say the hardest part of any audition is choosing the songs. The songs you choose should be songs that truly show off your talents. This artful skill takes time to develop, so keep looking at songs to continue expanding your book of songs.
Plenty of variety will be one of the most important aspects to consider when choosing your list of songs. When you have variety you can offer a well-balanced yet diverse set of songs for the judges to hear. A good choice is to start off with glorious high notes in the first song and then switch gears in the second.
Showing off your strengths as a singer will be easy if you have more variety. If each of your songs has a narrow range, search for songs that allow you to show off some high notes right after you sing your belt song. Remember that range is the highest and lowest note that your voice can get to and all the notes in between. One thing to remember is you definitely don’t want to have each song bring the same kind of character.
It’s possible that you will be asked to sing a pop song, but if you want to show variety then go back in time to early musical theater songs, later songs, and anything else that would bring forth a different appeal. Often singers confine themselves to singing contemporary songs. Utilizing an earlier time period within your songs will be of great benefit when you have your audition.
At your audition, remember that they’re looking at you from the minute you walk in the door and not just when you sing. Show them how great you look in your outfit and remember that personality and charisma will set you apart from everyone else. Think about what the character looks like. It’s good to suggest the character, but not dress exactly like them. It also important to understand that you may not be offered the part straight away. You may end up with a second audition so do your best every time and you’ll reap the benefits.
