How To Handle Bed Wetting Five Year Olds

Self esteem problems and the fear of sleeping outside of the child’s normal are just two of the symptoms that can occur when the underlying issue of the child’s bed wetting is not addressed. The parents and the child must both display a great deal of patience and invest a lot of time to attempt to resolve this difficult issue and avoid a social problem that could potentially last for years.

Normal development and general good health should be assured by a doctor before trying to tackle the problem of bed wetting. Most bed wetting is a perfectly normal part of growing up, but there can sometimes be underlying medical causes or developmental issues that should be ruled out first and only a doctor can do this.

One tool that can help with a bed wetting child is the bed wetting alarm. This is used to wake a child up during the night, and get the child into the habit of waking at night to use the bathroom. Being to deeply asleep to wake up is only one of the causes of bed wetting but the sleep alarm will help to develop a pattern of waking to urinate during the night.

You should also be aware that the bed wetting problem has little to do with your own parenting skills.

Another cause of the bed wetting problem is the children consuming too much liquids too close to bed time, leaving them with a full bladder during sleep.

Diuretic drinks such as colas should also be avoided by children experiencing bed wetting problems.

Waking in the middle of the night and retention control should be encouraged through positive reenforcement from the parents. Negative responses such as anger and impatience will only serve to increase the five year oldĀ  child’s stress levels and lower their self-esteem, neither of which is helpful to solve the underlying problem. The child should not be made to feel shamed of these episodes, they should only be encouraged to break the habit.

The bed wetting child is already under a great deal of stress, and as such, their diet or medication should not be changed unless directly approved by the child’s doctor. This will help the child to avoid adding further stress in an already stressful time.
