Youth Alcohol Abuse: A Severe Problem
Recent alcohol abuse statistics reveal that alcohol abuse among teenagers is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Quite a few alcohol addiction experts affirm that liquor, wine, and beer advertisements brought into being by the media are a significant reason for the increase in teen alcohol abuse.
Other alcohol abuse consultants think that the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and convenience of wine, beer, and liquor in our society.
Still other alcoholism specialists affirm that many of our young people engage in dangerous drinking due to the increased apprehension that they are subjected to.
From a somewhat different point of view, since both parents in a number of families are employed, the lack of parental guidance evidently has to play a key role in the increase in teenage alcohol abuse. And as a final point, various alcohol addiction experts assert that the spread of teenage alcohol abuse is due, to some extent, to our laissez-faire society.
Hazardous Drinking and Coping Skills Education
One component of teenage alcohol abuse that appears to be lacking in the substance abuse research literature, then again, is the nonexistence of educational courses that teach adolescents how to enhance their coping skills so that their destructive drinking behavior is radically reduced or done away with.
Stated another way, science has uncovered the fact that there is an indirect correlation between poor coping skills and abusive drinking. Fundamentally, this means that the more mediocre the coping skills, the greater the incidence of alcohol abuse. To the extent that this is a truthful claim, why isn’t coping skills education a primary part of the academic prospectus in all of our junior high schools, elementary schools, and high schools?
A Society That Accentuates Adolescent Coping Skills
Let us manufacture a scenario for the purpose of explanation. Let us imagine a society in which students are taught how to achieve high-quality coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their final year in high school.
In such a society, when life gets challenging, people who are ”coping skills experts” will be able to respond in a healthier and more productive manner, as opposed to others who fail to apply their coping skills.
Stated differently, students who reveal superior coping skills will be more able to think proactively and engage in excellent decision making as opposed to teens who, because they lack quality coping skills, gravitate to the “quick fix” of excessive drinking.
What would happen in the above “ideal” society, moreover, if teens not only got first-rate coping skills education but also obtained an excellent education that outlined the long term and short term unhealthy consequences associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Such an emphasis on drug and alcohol abuse facts, along with more highly developed coping skills instruction, it is pronounced, would help adolescents avoid the noticeable appeal associated with youth drinking and, accordingly, would fundamentally reduce the harmful drinking behavior exhibited by the youth in our country.
Teenage Abusive Drinking: Conclusion
There are indubitably quite a few well thought-out reasons why so many of our teenagers abuse alcohol. Such a complicated issue demands a wide-ranging and relevant educational and preventative response by our educators, students, parents, and politicians so that our youth can learn how to cope with life’s difficulties in a more fruitful and responsible manner rather than gravitating to excessive drinking behavior to solve their problems.
